AFRICA-DESIGN @ DESIGN2020
Dear Design Society Members:
If you are attending the DESIGN 2020 Online Conference, we would like to invite you to participate in the online workshop on DESIGN FOR GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, October 26th, 14:30-16:00 (Central European Time).
The workshop is a sequel to the one held at ICED2019 in Delft last year and part of the Design Society’s AFRICA-DESIGN initiative (see AFRICA-DESIGN). We will continue the effort to support a network of design researchers, educators, and practitioners based in African countries with particular emphasis on design for sustainable development, and to link them with colleagues in the worldwide design community.
The specific objectives for the workshop are:
- Continue to build the AFRICA-DESIGN Network connections
- Initiate planning for a follow-on ICED 2021 Workshop;
- Establish co-authoring agreements on future research papers, for example for ICED 2021 or for the Design Science Journal Thematic Collection on Global Sustainable Development;
- Undertake joint research and educational projects, including instructional work.
The workshop will focus on the intersection of four research themes generated in the ICED 2019 Delft workshop :
- Design and systems approaches for complex systems contributing to the UN SDG ́s
- Co-designing design education for sustainable development
- Efficient resource usage/low tech development
- Sustainable product-service design methods and tools.
The tentative agenda is as follows:
- Welcome
- Invited brief presentations by colleagues from African Institutions on current activities and interests
- Break/transition
- Breakout Rooms discussion on select research topics/applications
- Report-outs and next steps
