Warm greetings from the IDC School of Design, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India.
We are delighted to invite you, your colleagues, research scholars, and students to contribute to EMERGE 2027 – Emerging Design Inquiry, the second edition of our international research conference, to be held on 26–27 February 2027 at IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India.
Building upon the first edition, EMERGE continues its commitment to nurturing emerging design research, encouraging critical inquiry, and creating a collaborative platform for researchers, educators, students, and industry practitioners to exchange knowledge and perspectives on the evolving discipline of product design.
EMERGE 2027 is organised around the theme:
Product Design for a Changing World
As design navigates rapidly evolving technologies, environmental challenges, changing social expectations, and new ways of living, we invite researchers and practitioners to reflect upon, question, and reimagine the role of product design in shaping our collective future.
We welcome original research papers and practice-based contributions across six thematic tracks:
- Design for Healthcare – Healthcare products, medical devices, accessibility, assistive technologies, and inclusive healthcare innovation.
- Product Design Pedagogy and Product Design Theory – Design education, teaching methodologies, design knowledge, theoretical foundations, and evolving pedagogical practices.
- Design for Craft – Craft innovation, traditional knowledge, material exploration, contemporary fabrication, and the intersection of craft and technology.
- Design for Sustainable, Resilient and Just Futures – Circular and regenerative design, social innovation, ethical design, sustainable transitions, and systemic design impact.
- Design for Play – Playful products and environments, inclusive play, learning through play, and physical and social experiences.
- Product Design and Emerging Technology – Artificial intelligence, connected products, AR/VR, smart devices, wearables, and emerging product technologies.
We particularly encourage submissions from early-career researchers, doctoral scholars, young academics, and design practitioners who wish to contribute new ideas, methods, critical perspectives, and research-led design practices.
A Special Opportunity for Young Researchers
Presenters under the age of 35 whose papers, posters, or demonstrations are selected will receive a 100% waiver of conference registration fees. However, an article processing fee will be charged for publication.
Publication and Research Dissemination
All submissions will undergo a peer-review process. Accepted full papers will be presented at the conference and published in the conference proceedings.
Selected posters and demonstrations will also have the opportunity to be presented at the conference, providing a platform for research exchange, discussion, and feedback.
