Talk Title: Shape/wear - reviewing textile usage and future legislations from a consumer point of view

Bio: Johanna Riedel is, above all, a textile enthusiast. Her path has taken her from hands-on craftsmanship as a seamstress into the worlds of textile chemistry, OEKO-TEX® certifications and GOTS audits, to a M.Sc. In Interdisciplinary Product Development with focus on Human Centered Design, and has now landed her in a position where sharing means caring - in this case, sharing knowledge. The Hohenstein Academy is the modern day rendition of a former textile school in rural Germany, and her focus is to connect people for new ideas and create more responsible textile futures through knowledge sharing.

Brief Abstract: Clothing is a topic that everybody can relate to. The textile industry is one of the most polluting sectors globally, and sadly, also one creating tons and tons of waste each year. Some countries have recently tightened their legislative frameworks to reign in overproduction and overconsumption, but what are the effects on us? In this talk, we'll review current dystopian aspects of overproduction and overconsumption and dive into some utopian scenarios: What could textile use look like, what are the trade-offs, and how far are we willing to go?

Hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Anatasia and Rima on behalf of the DJE SIG
