Professor Emerita Gabriela Goldschmidt
Until her retirement professor Emerita Gabriela Goldschmidt held the Mary Hill Swope Chair in Architecture & Town Planning at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. A graduate of the School of Architecture at Yale University, she had practiced architecture until she became a full-fledged academic. Based at the Technion, she had also held visiting appointments at MIT, Stanford, Delft and Montreal Universities and Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. Over the years she taught a large number of studio courses, but gradually she became very interested in researching the processes of design learning and practicing in all design disciplines, with an emphasis on idea generation. Her research interests include design cognition and in particular reasoning, representation and visual thinking, and design education. She is the author of a large number of papers and the co-editor (with William Porter of MIT) of Design Representation, published by Springer in 2004. Her book Linkography: Unfolding the design process was published by MIT Press in 2014.
How I Became a Design Researcher
No one trajectory leads to becoming a design researcher. This talk is an interim overview of one case of a designer who became a design researcher (that’s me). Research questions were formulated based on experience as a designer and design teacher, and by observing children designing. Two major lines of research anchored in cognition were developed over the years: notating and measuring design reasoning using linkography, and visual thinking in design. The main methodology used is protocol analysis.
