Abstract:
Both service design and designing for and with children require specialized knowledge. Service design challenges designers to apply systems thinking to create solutions that consider stakeholders, interactions, processes, and infrastructures across time and place. Designing for and with children requires attention to the cognitive, emotional, and sensorimotor capabilities of different age groups. By nature, these two domains are quite distinct. These differing knowledge requirements may be one reason they are rarely introduced together as a single studio project in an educational context. However, service design also offers an opportunity for collaborative student teams to develop expertise in designing for and with children. This paper shares pedagogical insights from teaching undergraduate collaborative studio courses focused on service design for and with children. The collaboration involves industrial design and communication design students. Through reflective analysis and a critical review of student submissions and verbal feedback, the paper discusses the use of service design as a mediator for collaboration between the two disciplines as students navigate the challenges of designing for and with children and interdisciplinary collaboration.
