Abstract:
Proposals to shift from an anthropocentric approach toward a more-than-human (MtH) perspective in industrial design have emerged as responses to ongoing environmental challenges and rapid technological developments. Building on posthumanist thought, the theoretical foundations of MtH design have expanded significantly over the last decade, with a marked increase in scholarly contributions in the past five years. Despite this growing theoretical base, the practical application of MtH perspectives in industrial design remains limited. Methods, tools, and processes for implementing MtH design are still lacking. This situation poses particular challenges for a profession grounded in practice. This gap is also evident in industrial design education, where educators are seeking effective ways to prepare future designers to engage with MtH concerns. In this paper, we present a systematic review of how MtH design has been incorporated into industrial design education. To ensure a broad and interdisciplinary perspective, we include work from industrial design, product design, interaction design, communication design, and human–computer interaction. Our search was conducted across Web of Science, Scopus, ACM’s Digital Library, and the Design Research Society’s Digital Library. We are currently in the process of screening and coding the retrieved articles, a stage that will be completed before the full paper submission deadline for EPDE 2026. Our findings will report on the pedagogical approaches, methods, tools, and processes identified in prior work, aiming to support industrial design educators in meaningfully integrating MtH design into their courses and curricula.
