Abstract:
The research seeks to explore the pedagogical choices that can encourage or limit design students’ choices to address a variety of sustainable initiatives as part of their design projects. The research method is based on a focus group during which participants were asked to share a significant design project experience related to sustainability. As participants were design students, the discussions highlighted which factors can motivate or prevent students from considering sustainable aspects of their design as part of their projects. Data analysis highlights challenges and good practices from the learner’s perspective. The discussion exposes three main considerations: the paradox of designers, the timing and complexity of projects, the social scope of sustainability.
