Abstract:
The travel guide “AGILien” was developed by the VDI Technical Committee 710 to make agile development of mechatronic products understandable, accessible and practically useful. Instead of promoting agility as a trend or a fixed framework, the guide uses the metaphor of a journey to explain principles, culture, benefits and challenges of agile ways of working. This contribution gives an overview of the guide’s content and discusses why such a guide is relevant today. Two aspects are examined in greater depth: agility as a response to complexity through iterative learning cycles, and the cultural change required for self-organization and leadership in mechatronic development. The paper argues that the value of the complete guide lies in connecting history, mindset, application and practical reflection.
