Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Please note that these resources are accessible exclusively to Design Society members.

STUDYING DESIGNING AND DESIGNERS:A Journey from Design Computing through Design Cognition to Design Neurocognition

Join us for the first Design Society Seminar Series with talks taking place in September, October and November 2020.

In this talk I trace the arc of my own research on studying designing and designers that has run parallel to the developments in the field. There are many approaches to studying design, here I present four paradigmatic approaches. In the 1960s, access to computers became available, although with difficulty. This spurred interest in building mathematical models of designing and of design processes. In the late 1970s, 80s and 90s Artificial Intelligence opened up symbolic modelling as a way of modelling and designing and became the dominant paradigm. AI modeling of designing continues to this day. In the 1990s tools from cognitive science to study design cognition were being developed. Design cognition gives insight into the designer’s mind. In the 2010s tools from neuroscience became accessible to design researchers to study design neurocognition. Design neurocognition gives insight into the designer’s brain. This talk covers these four paradigmatic approaches to studying designing and designers.
