Abstract:
This paper investigates the long-term potential and challenges of the development and use of teaching and learning materials using a cross-university development project for providing an Engineering Design Education course or rather OER as an example. The study examines how these materials are currently used, adapted, and perceived by lecturers five years after their initial implementation. Data sets were collected through semi-structured interviews with project participants from different universities. Results show that the materials are widely used in introductory and advanced engineering courses, mainly to support self-study and heterogeneous student groups. Lecturers value the modularity, adaptability, and high quality of resources, which reduce development effort. However, meaningful integration into courses is necessary to motivate student use, and the exchange of materials beyond academic networks remains limited. These findings allow generalization for future cross-university development of learning materials, like the importance of high modularity which allows easy selection of individual materials.
