Abstract:
Technical systems emit sounds that convey information about operating states and interaction processes. However, systematic approaches for investigating different levels of such process-relevant auditory information in physically coupled mixed reality environments are scarce. This paper presents and pilots a study design addressing this gap. A robot-guided mixed reality drilling task is implemented with five auditory feedback conditions that vary in their informational content, including force-dependent sonification based on user interaction. We assess subjective and objective measures targeting presence, sense of agency, perceived auditory support, and drilling performance. A pilot study evaluates the feasibility of the proposed approach.
