Abstract:
The harmonization of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the United States' Positive Train Control (PTC) presents a critical challenge for transnational high-speed rail projects. While both systems enhance railway safety, they differ in architecture, communication protocols, and regulatory framework. This paper applies the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to systematically analyze and manage ETCS and PTC subsystem integration. Using DSM to manage complex interdependencies, the study develops a matrix capturing functional, data, and hardware interactions among onboard, trackside, and control center components. Through dependency clustering and interface analysis, the study identifies key integration areas like braking curves, train localization, and radio communication. A harmonized interface is proposed using modularization principles and DSM-based iteration. This framework supports unified train control system architectures, improving safety, interoperability, and traceability for high-speed rail.
