Abstract:
Lightweight components with natural fibre reinforced plastics (NFRP) offer great potential in reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, but the weak mechanical properties of natural fibres limit possible applications. This contribution provides an insight into the design, manufacturing and recycling of components made from selectively reinforced hybrid NFRP, with the aim of expanding the range of applications for NFRP. A design method for an effective placement of local reinforcements to increase mechanical performance is developed. Automated fibre laying techniques like Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP) and Dry Fibre Placement (DFP) are considered. Finally, a laser-based pyrolysis process was developed for CF extraction. The design method is applied using the example of a seat shell.
