Abstract:
By investigating the sources of inspiration that influence the creation of cultural meanings for Gringsing, it confirms the endogenous sociocultural process that took place in the making of Gringsing, which later took visual forms and perceived in the traditional usage. These sources constructed the social representation specific only to identifying the community of Tenganan Pagringsingan, in which Gringsing is conceived as the object chosen to represent this ‘experience’ and to communicate their identity when interacting with members outside their community. While it serves as a communal symbol, it can also serve as a tool to generate a conservation method for its own culture. In response to counteract the degrading cultural values of Gringsing culture influenced by the inevitable force of globalization, a small gesture to protect its original values can be made by recording the cultural information presented in the forms, production process and usage, where the information can also be utilized to propose a method of conserving aimed to stimulate and engage the young village members to re-recognize and explore their regional resources that may trigger more endogenous development in the future that determines the course of Gringsing culture.
