Abstract:
SBD is a Product Development (PD) methodology that defines a set of system designs to reduce risk associated with down selecting to single designs. SBD explores trade-offs and searches for sets that balance risk and performance. SBD temporally down selects to a single or family of design(s), only as uncertainty clears. Product Design Structure Matrix (DSM) allows a structured model to represent a system and its subsystem dependencies. Defense PD has formal epochal acquisition milestones and design, testing and production reviews. Defense PD is fraught with requirements creep and budget uncertainty. We propose integrating DSM to support PD epochal decisions by highlighting integration and efficient development. We present a literature review of DSM that potentially supports SBD. Our goal is to show both subsystem interactions in a DSM matrix and the subsystem technology choices of an eventual system or system family.
