Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Abstract:
For the development of hybrid powertrains the developer has to ensure that the customer requirements will be fulfilled in an early state of the product development process. Therefore, he has to know which parameters he has to regard and how to proceed to fulfill them. In this paper a new approach for the selection of the electrical machine and the combustion engine for the hybrid powertrain will be introduced. This approach is based on the method of the systematic selection of materials in construction processes. The parameters that have to be considered to fulfill the customer requirements regarding the driving performance of the vehicle are the acceleration and the maximum speed of the vehicle. The selection of the electrical machine and the combustion engine out of a database is done separately in acceleration-velocity-diagrams, which are also introduced in this paper. After this separate selection the selected motors can be analysed in a combined acceleration-velocity diagram, to identify the limits of the combined operation of both machines. With this information the developer can execute fuel consumption simulations to compare different hybrid topologies regarding their efficiency in the defined use case.
