Abstract

How to manage design efficiently in manufacturing industry is not a new topic. However, current knowledge system is built on western experience, which is in developed economics and cradle for design management concepts. In those developing countries, with young and high growth economics, manufacturers have to learn and adapt to local context to survive in fierce competition. Their distinguished performance on managing design is disclosed in this paper. Based on it, two layers of managing design is discovered. Usually, manufacturers focus on building design ability via investment in visible factors, while neglect invisible factors, which will determine strategy and sustainability of design.
