Abstract

Various reasons lead automotive engineers to strive for approaches to design
cars as efficient as possible. Apart from aerodynamics, rolling resistance
and drive train, a car’s weight has a major impact on the energy consumption
during use phase. In the past, different strategies have been used to lower the
total weight of the chassis. One highly promising strategy is to combine different
materials by deforming or molding processes in one hybrid component. This
contribution aims to support developers in choosing the right starting point to
convert classical parts, e.g. from high-tensile steel, into hybrid structures. A
procedure model is being presented which leads from a company’s strategic
aims to a recommendation of parts to develop in hybrid design, using a catalogue
of evaluation criteria based on hybrid design’s potentials.
