Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Please note that these resources are accessible exclusively to Design Society members.

Abstract:
In this thesis a theory - the theory of dispositions is presented. The theory treats relationships between parameters of a product and the parameters of the systems which are realising the product and which the product meets during its life. When the theory is used during design the designer tries to foresee parameter relationships and choose the parameters of the product which optimize the conditions during production and product life. In the project the actual parameters and relationships are identified. The relationships are treated on four levels: the range, concept, structure and component levels. The so-called universal virtues: costs, through-put-time, quality, efficiency, flexibility, risk, and environmental effects are used for measures for the optimum results of a disposition. The theoretical result of the project is the formulation of the theory of dispositions which points out relationships between the parameters of the product and the product life and the related rationalization effects. Important conceptual models are the score model and the model of a dispositional mechanism which describe an important type of integration between the various functional departments of a company. The practical results of the project include: the formulation of a conceptual framework for the designer to use when working with optimization and control of total life conditions. Finally, the conceptual framework can be used in the creation and strengthening of methods for Design for X such as: Design for Cost, Quality, Service or Environment.
