Abstract

Validation of manufacturability is an important task during automobile development in order to reduce the risk of expensive rework and disturbances in the subsequent serial production processes. Due to the advancements in visualization, simulation and Rapid Prototyping technology, the field of application of Virtual and Rapid Prototyping techniques for validation has expanded and many different validation methods have been developed and applied. These methods use virtual and/or physical models to represent product/process properties related to manufacturability. This paper introduces a procedure to assess quality of validation methods by analyzing manufacturability problems detected by these methods and in (pre-) series production processes.
