Abstract:
For complex assemblies, variation, stemming from the manufacturing process, can propagate through the product and have a negative influence on its functionality. Today, various simulation tools are available that provide opportunities to predict the effects of variation. However, throughout the product development process, the use of different simulation tools can be disjoint and the full potential of predicting variation through simulation has not yet been reached. In this paper we have investigated how simulation tools such as Computer Aided Tolerancing (CAT) software and injection molding (IM) simulation software are used at five Swedish companies. Focus is set on the opportunities to use simulation tools to increase product robustness in the development of plastic products. Through an interview study, current problems and issues connected to variation simulation were identified. A number of steps towards attaining a more integrated variation simulation process are suggested.
