Abstract

Current methods for assessing reliability require that designers have access to information that is only available when the product is almost completely developed (e.g. manufacturing data). Current methods for assessing robustness relay excessively on engineers experience. This results in longer development times, as robustness and reliability (R&R) assessments result in the need to review the design. This paper aims at characterising the information needed to perform the most used R&R assessments, and to suggest how to improve them in order to make them applicable during conceptual design.
