Abstract

Rapidly changing consumer and engineering product market trends have dictated the need for manufacturers to produce goods that can either be readily configured to the shilling market and/or be created by an adaptive manufacturing process, Only through implementing this strategy can the associated companies remain competitive in the global marketplace and grow their market sector. This paper presents recent research findings which are pivotal in enabling a manufacturing facility that satisfies the latter need identified above: The work will ultimately culminate with the creation of an innovative and adaptable Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (RP&M) facility. Specifically, the objectives of the reported experimental work were to establish suitable types of wire for the hot-wire cutter and determine their related surface finish and cut accuracy effects; when cutting expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam sheet under a range of cutting conditions.
