Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Abstract:
Function modeling is an engineering tool used to connect the problem space and the solution space and simultaneously work together in both areas to generate solutions. Research on function modeling has mainly been focused on streamlining vocabulary and evaluating uses of function modeling, with limited emphasis on understanding function modeling as a tool to enhance creativity. This paper presents the evaluation of student generated function structure models using graph complexity metrics. The function models were collected from a user study conducted to understand the differences between chaining methods used to create function structure models. Analysis of the results suggests that there are significant differences between the three chaining methods employed, with forward chaining adding more complexity.
