Abstract

The product development process in the automotive industry comprises a large number of interdisciplinary actors. This results in very complex communication situations, with a large variety of information sources, storage and transfer methods, thus leading to media breaks, which may complicate the information transfer process. An example is the representation of part geometries as three-dimensional CAD visualizations. Additional information, for example assembly sequences or simulation results, are generally available in different formats (e.g. text documents). This paper presents a solution to bridge the gap between geometric representations (in CAD systems) and other information types. In a case study at a German car manufacturer, assembly validation processes as part of the product development serve as a basis to create a visualization concept.
