Abstract

This dissertation describes the development of a theory based action plan for interaction design, focused on the interfaces of mechatronic products, i.e. products with embeded microprocessor, but not nessesarely a graphical display. The theoretical basis of this research is in the design science of mechanical engineering (wdk), to wich other relevant theories are attached. From the relatively well-established scientific society of human-computer interaction (hci) a number of interesting, but not integrated, descriptions of interaction, and also a number of design schools, are identified and analysed. The many isolated viewpoints of the interaction phenomenon is integrated by mapping these into a comprehensive and operational model of the design object called 'the five dimensions of interaction'. Elaborated from this model, the notions of 'design degrees of freedom of interaction', 'interaction concept' and interaction quality' are conceptually defined.
Each of the identified hci design schools is described as representing an individual and relatively narrow capability. This indicates that each school advantageously can be used with certain design problems or design situations. Therefore, in this project each school is attempted to be made accessible from a comprehensive design action plan. The dissertation defines two fundamentally different design approaches: an engineering-wise approach and an experience based approach. Where the engineering-wise approach is build on a design rationale grounded on causality based structures of the design object, the experience based approach is grounded in human's (user's and designer's) experience of, and reaction to, concrete design solutions. It is argued that these two approaches should be used balanced in interaction design. Designer's mental blocks are described as a major problem in performing interaction design. Designer's intellectual and expressive blocks are hampering a vital conceptualization of design ideas. This dissertation surgests mental exercises and the use of the scenario language as a conceptual blockbusting cure.
An action plan for interaction design is surgested to be structured as four maps: (1) a map of the design process, (2) a map of design techniques, (3) a map of the interaction phenomenon, and (4) a map of the interface phenomenon. It is argued that an industrial design organisation advantageously can use these maps as a tool to navigate an interaction design project with great accuracy.
Resumé
Denne afhandling omhandler udvikling af et teoribaseret handlingsgrundlag for betjeningsdesign. Fokus er rettet mod design af mekatroniske produkters betjening, det viI sige produkter med indbygget mikroprocessorstyring, men ikke nødvendigvis et grafisk display som betjeningselement. Projektet tager udgangspunkt i en maskinteknisk designteori, hvortil andre relevante (herunder humanistiske) teoriomrader knyttes. Fra det eksisterende og relativt veludviklede videnskabelige miljø omkring menneske/computer-samspil (hci) er der identificeret en rćkke vćsentlige, men usammenhćngende beskrivelser af dels betjeningsfćnomenet, dels designprocessen. I projektet kortlćgges betjeningsfćnomenet ved en bred model, kaldet 'de fern dimensioner af betjening', der sammenstiller de mange enkeltstaende teoretiske beskrivelser i et sammenhćngende og beskrivende mønster. Pa baggrund af denne model kortlćgges pa principielt niveau beskrivelser af konstruktive frihedsgrader af betjening, betjeningskoncept og betjeningskvalitet. Hver af hci-designskolerne pavises at vćre udtryk for en individuel og relativ snćver styrkeprofil, som gør, at hver skole er attraktiv for bestemte typer af designopgaver. Derfor søges aIle skoler gjort tilgćngelige i et bredt handlingsgrundlag for betjeningsdesign. Afhandlingen definerer to principielt forskellige designangrebsvinkler, en ingeni0rma=ssige og en oplevelsesbaseret. Hvor den ingeniørmćssige tager udgangspunkt i et designrationale grundet i kausalitetsbaserede strukturer af designobjektet, tager den oplevelsesbaserede udgangspunkt i menneskers (brugeres, designeres) oplevelse og reaktion pa konkrete konstruktive løsninger. Det pavises, at disse to angrebsvinkler med fordel kan anvendes balanceret i betjeningsdesign. Designeres mentale blokeringer beskrives som et vćsentligt problem i relation til betjeningsdesign. Intellektuelle og udtryksbetingede blokeringer virker hćmmende for en effektiv idegenerering. Afhandlingen foreslår mentale trćningsøvelser og anvendelse af scenarioteknik som kur mod disse blokeringer. Et handlingsgrundlag for betjeningsdesign foreslås struktureret som fire landkort: (1) landkort over projektforløb, (2) landkort over arbejdsteknikker, (3) landkort over betjening og (4) landkort over interface. Der argumenteres for, at en industriel udviklingsorganisation med fordel kan navigere et betjeningsdesignprojekt med stor trćsikkerhed udfra landkortene.
