Abstract

The integrated PKT-approach for developing modular product families aims at the methodical development of maximum external product variety using the lowest possible internal process and component variety. This contribution proposes two approaches how to establish modular structures derived by using the PKT-approach within a company in order to capitalize from the benefits modular structures offer. The first approach deals with the methodical development of standardized hardware for use throughout the corporate product program in order to gain lot size effects. How to make use of the expected benefits of modular structures in all product life phases by using knowledge management tools is topic of the second proposed approach.
