Abstract:
This paper proposes a design methodology which emphasizes the usage of CAE tools to overcome local effects in joining sandwich materials at an early stage of the product development. Several case studies have been carried out using finite element analysis to understand the local behavior of the sandwich beam mainly under transverse loads. The results of the simulations are used to minimize stiffness mismatching at the connection interfaces by deriving necessary functions, choice of materials and preliminary embodiment parameters of a sandwich connector. A demonstration example is used to illustrate the underlying principles.
