Special Edition on: The Value of Design & Engineering Education in a Knowledge Age
Call for Papers - Design and Technology Education: An International Journal
Co-Guest Editors Ross Brisco (University of Strathclyde) & Anne Louise Bang (VIA University College, Denmark)
The 22nd International Conference on Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE) was held online for the first time in 2020. The conference brought together the design education community for the first time since the COVID pandemic began to utilise all the lessons we have learned in online communication. 89 Participants joined from 23 countries. 80 papers were published on the theme of The Value of Design & Engineering Education in a Knowledge Age.
In the Knowledge Age, technology and ideas are the main sources of economic growth, and this requires workers with new and different skills. Knowledge is more than what is in the minds of experts or classified within separate disciplines. Knowledge is now defined and valued not only by what it is, but also by its potential as a driver for innovation. Within technology education, we should be aware of the future requirements, and support skills development in our students. These changes have major implications for our educational system. We need to empower students to be able to locate, evaluate and work creatively with knowledge to generate new and improved solutions that can be implemented in practice.
This special edition aims to explore how educators will tackle changing engineering and design practices in the coming years in line with the demands of students and industry. This sentiment comes from a need to share knowledge and experiences in engineering and design education and discuss how barriers might be overcome. We encourage the submission of robust research on Design and Engineering Education, to encourage novel concepts and increased value in a knowledge age.
This Special Edition will continue in the theme of the conference. We invite manuscript submissions on the topic of The Value of Design & Engineering Education in a Knowledge Age on all aspects of Design and Technology Education, Design Education and Technology Education in primary, secondary and higher education sectors, initial teacher education (ITE) and continuous professional development (CPD). Since the conference, the environment that we work in has changed. For many of us, online teaching was in addition to our primary focus in situ, classroom-based activities. But this has now switched. We have been working and teaching online for over a year now, and so we invite manuscripts on topics that address the Value of Design & Engineering Education in this new landscape.
The deadline for submission is: 23rd July 2021.
