Abstract
The contribution in hand starts with the description of the special requirements of cost-efficient design of mechatronic products. Thereby the formulation of a generic "design to cost" guideline with integrated auxiliary means such as design rules is introduces as one appropriate approach for the support of multidisciplinary product development processes. However, to set up design rules, according to the model of classic mechanical engineering, at first sound knowledge about the cost origin of mechatronic products has to be attained. For the analysis of the connection between the structural product complexity and the resulting product costs a study design was developed and a data base from exemplary mechatronic products of different industries was gathered. Besides the study design and the data base the contribution also describes the results of the analyses of the individual products as well as the product-spanning conclusions. Also a prospect is given on the derivation of the first design rules for the cost-optimized design of mechatronic products.
