Abstract

Because exchanging material information between OEMs and/or OEM and supplier becomes more and more important, the specification VDA 231-200 defines a standard structure for storing material information in PDM systems. This article analyses the difficulties by applying the specification in an existing PDM environment and gives an example how to overcome those. In addition to the challenge of creating a database to fit the requirements of VDA 231-200, the next step of combining the material information of different sources. In order to do so, an adequate and precise identification is needed. The shown way to standardise the material naming on the basis of the chemical composition was proven to work effectively.
