Abstract

The main objective of the research presented in the study is to accelerate the improvement of complex products. In the first step, the product life cycle is examined as a whole (taking into consideration each separate phase of the design process). Finally, frontloading – the early phase of product development – is focussed on. The so-called ”information net” thus built up provides continuously updated transparent information already in the early phase of innovation projects. Thereby the product life cycle becomes ”closed”, a body of knowledge on the requirements towards the product is accumulated, and the process of product development can be accelerated. In addition to information recycling, the core of research is the ”information net” built up on the basis of this body of knowledge. Based on a conceptional product structure or the function structure of a product, components in the early phase of product development constitute a structured network, providing an appropriate starting point for the detail design to close the design process. One of the peculiarities of the research is that the proposed solution would be developed by having in mind the theory of Cross Enterprise Engineering, establishing links between existing technical scientific systems at the same time. This implies multidimensional cooperation in the early phase of product development process both within and outside the company (including suppliers and customers).
