A new Design Society Special Interest Group has been formed with the goal of creating a space and building a community for researchers who are interested in the study of health systems design. This initiative builds on the perception there is a steadily increasing interest in this topic within and beyond the Design Society.

Systems design research and practice has a lot to offer in actively tackling the major health challenges facing society, and the Design Society can play a key role in making this happen. The need to connect people and technology provides us with unprecedented opportunities that we would like to bring to the fore with this Special Interest Group.

By leveraging the strengths of systems designers to be connectors between multiple academic, industry- and policy stakeholders and research disciplines, we are committed to working towards ensuring healthy lives and well-being, UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, and promoting partnerships for the goals, SDG 17. Treating health as a complex socio-technical system, our mission is to change health and care by design.

This SIG builds on three international meetings on healthcare systems design research, held in Cambridge and Copenhagen in 2018 and 2019, and will be formally launched with a workshop at DESIGN 2020 https://www.designconference.org/programme. A key goal of this workshop will be to develop a roadmap for the development of the SIG, with a focus on planning for a meeting in Delft late in 2020.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to Cavtat or Delft in 2020.
