Abstract:
Realistic surface topographies are essential for meaningful simulations given inevitable manufacturing-induced variations. Yet most synthetic surface models rely on generic statistical descriptions that ignore the specific manufacturing process. This work introduces a frequency-domain approach for generating process-specific surfaces, combining the measured amplitude spectrum with a synthesized, coherence-based phase spectrum. This enables semi-random reconstruction of non-self-affine, anisotropic surface structures. Compared to conventional Gaussian random-field models, the approach shows superior reconstruction of peak height and RMS-gradient with up to 40 % lower deviation, indicating its suitability for contact mechanics, tribological analysis, and assembly simulation.
