Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Abstract:
Similarity-based Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) support sustainable product generation development in early design stages despite limited data and model uncertainties. Building on the Product Generation Engineering (PGE) approach, the proposed concept uses systematic variation analyses to determine component similarities between product generations. Components with major changes are defined as variation hotspots and are newly assessed by LCA, while LCA results of unchanged or slightly modified components are reused. This targeted focus aims to increase LCA efficiency and result quality in conceptual design. The concept of similarity-based LCA is applied to a case study involving a Pedelec across different use cases.
