Abstract:
In this contribution, a modular, file-based system architecture for the automated design of nonlinear compression springs was developed and evaluated using an application example. The proposed workflow combines algorithmic CAD generation, automated meshing, nonlinear finite element analysis, and evolutionary optimization using open-source tools. Defined exchange formats enable data transfer and independent execution of the modules. The approach was validated by designing a progressive bicycle suspension spring. In total, 147 variants were generated, simulated, and evaluated, achieving a relative force RMSE of 4.93%. The results show that different spring geometries can reproduce a prescribed spring characteristic and confirm the fundamental functionality of the architecture.
