Knowledge Base Repository

In addition to research papers, the Design Society is developing several valuable resources for those interested in the study of design. These include a repository of PhD theses, a library of case studies and transcripts of design activities, and an archive of our newsletters. Please note that these resources are accessible exclusively to Design Society members.

Abstract:
Data-driven design (DDD) has significant potential to enhance the efficiency and quality of engineering design processes by seamlessly leveraging and integrating data from across the product lifecycle. This capability enables unprecedented opportunities for improvement that were not traditionally achievable. However, realizing these benefits remains challenging due to the lack of detailed classification and systematic analysis of existing successful use cases. To address this gap, this paper proposes a matrix-based methodology for the classification and analysis of DDD use cases. A domain-mapping matrix (DMM) is introduced to systematically classify use cases according to data types, data sources, and associated lifecycle phases. Building on this, a design structure matrix (DSM) is developed to quantify similarities between use cases through pairwise comparison. The integration of these approaches results in a multi-domain matrix (MDM) framework that enables practitioners to identify and prioritize promising DDD use cases aligned with their specific data environments and contexts.
