Abstract:
Group allocation dominates the start of many design educational activities and constraint-based approaches are increasingly being used as a method of managing group diversity. No lone gender or home/overseas students within groups combined with random assignment are typical examples of the constraints educators might place during group allocation. This paper reports a numerical study into the effects of constraints on group composition and the chances of individuals working together following a group allocation exercise. The results support future engineering design educators by providing data on the likely outcome from various group allocation scenarios.
