Abstract:
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is gradually being introduced into academic design courses across. Naturally, its introduction poses many challenges for learners and instructors in any design domain, such as the demand for technical literacy required to operate these tools and overreliance on them in producing creative output. Alongside these, GenAI bears a promise for design learners, by allowing to quickly introduce relevant visual materials for inspiration, translating simple design representations into detailed ones (e.g. sketches to renderings) and more. Considering the above, to further integrate GenAI effectively into design curricula, it is important to learn about the possibilities for its implementation in pedagogical scenarios, their benefits and limitations. To this aim, we are conducting a systematic literature review of the proceedings of a past conference which highlighted the usage of GenAI in educational contexts (E&PDE 2024 - Design Education in the Generative AI Era). This paper reports on initial findings from a PRISMA-style survey (N=118) of the complete proceedings of the above conference. Our primary objectives were to (1) identify papers reporting on empirical findings concerning the application of GenAI in academic contexts of design education, (2) classify them by the academic scenario (course, workshop etc.), the discipline, the tool and the task supported, (3) draw conclusions regarding underdressed areas in exploring the impact of GenAI on design education. Initial findings reveal a significant focus on user experience, alongside a need to further evaluate its contribution to achieving pedagogical goals in project-based learning.
