Abstract:
How can digital mobility service interfaces facilitate behavioural change towards more sustainable travel in Australian suburban university settings? This doctoral research addresses this question through a practice-based investigation into the commuting patterns of international student drivers at Monash University’s Clayton campus. The international students from suburban university campuses frequently rely on private cars, due to the unique infrastructural, social, and cultural barriers to adopting public or shared-micro mobility options. In response, this project adopted participatory design methodology to co-develop a user-centred Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform that supports a shift away from private car use. Through a series of workshops involving journey mapping, interactive storytelling, and iterative interface prototyping, the study identifies factors influencing travel decisions and explores interface design strategies, such as personalised journey planning, incentive-based nudging, and gamification elements to promote multimodal adoption. Findings contribute to research on the role of user interface (UI) design in enabling sustainable behavioural change through enhanced future user experience (UX) of the MaaS digital platform.
