Abstract:
The objective of this research is to identify the characteristics of process of designer’s spontaneous activity. There are two types of designer’s activities: 1) spontaneous activity and 2) commissioned activity. Previous studies suggested that spontaneous activity is important to create innovative outcome. However, process of spontaneous activity has not been adequately researched empirically. To address this problem, we conducted a field survey of a designer to compare process of spontaneous activity to commissioned activity. In order to collect data about designer’s action, we used questionnaire which was repeatedly taken throughout the actual process. The results showed that process of spontaneous activity has two characteristics: 1) iteration of information gathering and idea sketching and 2) uncertainty of actions throughout the process. These findings can be beneficial in order to support and enhance productivity of designer’s spontaneous activity.
