Abstract

Within the product development process the product and the measurement system to validate the product functionalities has to be developed simultaneously. An effective measurement system initiates positive in-stage iterations to rapidly increase product maturity and avoid costly cross-gate iterations where development decisions have to be revised. The transformation of product functionalities in measurable values and the identification of suitable sensing elements are most important for measurement performance and therefore validation quality. The variety of possible solutions is extraordinary large due to massive amounts of measurement equipment available and various possibilities on measurement values representing product functions. This paper introduces a method to support the selection of measurement values and the quantitative evaluation of commercial sensor systems for product validation purposes.
