Abstract:
Design methods are used to support single steps of the product development process and are expected to contribute to reduce development time and higher degree of innovation. Increasing time and cost pressure as well as still low remaining practical use of design methods call for new approaches to describe and select appropriate methods. The high level of abstraction and
the theoretical overload are seen as the main deficits of design methods and their descriptions. In order to improve the description, selection and trainingof methods with relevance to current practice, an approach to describe design methods considering competencies and team aspects is presented. The proposed concept is based on requirements which were determined from a survey among experts from the industry as well as students.
