By examining one specific western manufacturer that is making this journey in some detail, it develops a systems framework that helps the overall system complexity to be deconstructed, and to be presented as an overall global factory ‘system of systems’, that links three specific systems: a production system, an innovation system, and a management system. We argue that this PIM (Production – Innovation – Management) segmentation of the system complexity, combined with the business process system that links them together within the global factory environment, represents a useful contribution for helping firms to address the complexities that they face when expanding from being nationally based international manufacturers, to being Global Factories.
