Abstract

This Ph.D. dissertation entitled "Systematic New Product Search" has been carried out at the Technical University of Denmark (DTH), Institute for Engineering Design.
The purpose of this project has been to develop new methods and procedures for the search for new product ideas in small and medium-sized companies. The project has been realized in collaboration with the Institute for Product Development (IPU), under which the developed tools have been tested in a series of new product searches carried out for Danish companies on a consultancy basis.
The project builds on the assumption of innovation as an evolutionary process, in which the new product search is rooted in the company's existing product range. The search can be carried out at different levels in the company's product range (business area level, product area level, product type level and product variant level) and be based on different search parameters (new technologies, new applications, lifestyle, materials etc.) In order to control this process, the so-called "PS-cone" has been developed.
As a guide for the product search as a whole, an integrated procedure using the company's situation as a starting point has been worked out (the PS-procedure). Models describing the company's level of ambition as for innovation (the PS-matrix), different settings for the idea-generation stage and models and concepts for the interpretation of needs and technology in the new product search have been developed. Finally, guidelines for the integration of the continuous new product search in the company are presented.
