Abstract

In mechatronic product development, there is a lack of a common understanding among different engineering domains. One step towards improving this situation is to propose information models capable of representing both hardware and software elements. The objective of this paper is to find such an information model, focusing on the early phases in the development process. The approach is to start on a theoretical level by analyzing theories from mechanical and software engineering. The basis for our proposed information model is the Chromosome Model, to which software elements found in software architecture theories are incorporated. The result, referred to as a metamodel, is then transformed into an information model by using STEP AP214. The information model is instantiated to validate and exemplify its use. The conclusions drawn from the work are that the Chromosome Model can be used as a metamodel for mechatronic products and that STEP AP214 can be utilized within the scope of the metamodel. The resulting information model which is here proposed captures both the functional and spatial relationships of a mechatronic product.
