Job posting - PhD scholarship: Developing Integrated Solutions in Nordic Manufacturing at Technical University of Denmark (DTU)

DTU Management Engineering invites applicants for a 3-year PhD position in “Systems approach to the development of integrated solutions in the Nordic manufacturing industry” starting in autumn 2017. The project will be based in the Engineering Systems Division under the supervision of Associate Professor Melanie Kreye. The project is part of the Division’s research within uncertainty management in complex socio-technical systems.

Solutions are a seamless integration of product and services to fulfil customer needs. The project focuses on how to integrate product development processes (based on product characteristics) and service development processes (based on activities and processes) to develop integrated solutions through a systems approach. Specifically, the project targets the issue of uncertainty management within solution development which manifests itself in high failure rates across industry sectors (as high as 79% failure rates with 25% of companies incurring losses). These uncertainties can arise from the increased operational complexity of solution development and is thus a core issue for managers in practice. This project will focus on categorising these uncertainties, identifying suitable management approaches for reducing and navigating uncertainties and disseminating results and guiding heuristics to engineering managers and other leading practitioners in relevant companies.

The Engineering Systems division is growing fast and is characterised by collegial, energetic staff and strong research collaborations with leading universities and industry worldwide. Our research focuses on understanding and improving the ways in which engineering systems are designed, managed, and operated throughout their life cycles. Our research spans the boundaries of 1. interdisciplinary engineering design (e.g. product design and development; systems engineering), 2. engineering project, program and portfolio management, and 3. related policy, public engagement and strategic processes.

Responsibilities and tasks
The project will take a systems approach and will be carried out in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. The project at Chalmers is entitled “Organising and managing for efficient development of integrated solutions”. It will further involve collaboration with one or more companies.

Research tasks include theoretical work with systems theories to conceptualise the topic of integrated solution development. Other tasks include empirical work in the companies including interviews and interactive workshops, surveys and possibly small experiments.

The project work requires good understanding of management issues in a technology-focused company. The work will require understanding of solutions development including relevant theories and methodologies. Furthermore, a background in and understanding of risk and uncertainty management would be of advantage.

The student will be required to:
conduct a literature review in uncertainty management, solution development and provision (including servitization),
Engage with Nordic industry partners to collect empirical data on solution development processes,
write high-level academic publications on an internationally leading level.

Qualifications
Candidates should be highly motivated and hold a master's degree in engineering, for example innovation management, engineering management, industrial engineering, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. For this specific project, similar relevant degrees can for example focus on risk management, project management, or decision analysis.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Melanie Kreye, Associate Professor and Anja Maier, Professor and Head of Division.

We offer
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on education, research, scientific advice and innovation, which contribute to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. We strive for academic excellence, collegial respect and freedom tempered by responsibility. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

The position will be based in the Engineering Systems Division at DTU Management Engineering in Lyngby, just outside Copenhagen, Denmark. The candidate will also engage in regular research visits at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
