We are glad to invite you to participate, submit presentations or topic suggestions for the 10th SIG Design Theory Paris Workshop which be held during January 30th to February 1st.
In addition to the usual 2-days workshop, a third day intended for initiating PhD students through tutorials on design theory will be held (details below on tutorial day).
Scientific content :
We welcome contributions in the areas of the Design Theory SIG :
1- Design Theory and other disciplines : AI, cognition, engineering sciences, data science, biology, physics...
2- The value of Design Theory for practitioners
3- Design Theory and Education
4- Design Theory and perception theory: reception and critic of design, identity of objects
5- Design theory and the economics of design
More information can be found:
Special topic : In addition to our usual topics, this year we would like to welcome presentations on Design theory and teaching – a topic particularly demanded in the last years by the SIG participants.
Several types of sessions will be held during the first two days (9am-6pm):
1) Substantial presentations (45mn-1hour) of ongoing research in the research areas of the SIG
2) Round tables and /or open discussions on new approaches and emerging issues
3) Parallel workshops, to have subgroup meetings on special topics or to discuss new research plans that could benefit from the cooperation of several SIG members and lead to new insights and co-publications
Final program and schedule : on the basis of suggestions and propositions coming from participants (see below registration procedure), the final program will be composed by the SIG chairmen
Tutorial Day - Introduction to design theory for PhD students (February 1st)
Target audience is scholars, especially PhD students, who are interested in research topics related to design theory. The objectives of the session are:
· To learn some of the foundational models used in design theory and research, their relationship and the historical context within which they were proposed,
· To develop skills in applying a variety of design methods in various situations for different purposes – including for research,
· To interact with and learn from specialist researchers in the field to develop and refine their own research questions and to build future collaboration opportunities.
Detailed program of the special session will be shortly available. See registration details below.
Submissions and registration: important dates
Participation to the two days SIG
a) Any person asking to participate, please send a participation demand before October 31, 2016 (participation is free, students are welcome).
b) For those who would like to make a presentation or to suggest topics for discussions, please send a short abstract of (no more than two pages) or a paper (published or not) (same deadline October 31, 2016).

Design Theory is an established area of research in the field of Design and important steps have been achieved since WW2. However, there is today a growing body of works that indicates a renewal of the approaches and issues of Design Theory. Among others, the following main evolutions have to be considered in order to coordinate efforts and increase international exchanges in Design Theory: a) Design Theory can today benefit from the maturation of several fundamental advances in Mathematics, Logic,...
