Robust Design

Interest: Research

Agenda

Traditionally focusing on an improvement of robustness via (computational) expensive virtual/physical experiments and the corresponding statistical analyses, RD has been often criticized for not offering enough guidance and support in early phases of development. In a new direction, the RD SIG would therefore like to bring RD thinking and research into earlier stages of development, including more pragmatic tools, which are also applicable in short iteration cycles.

We have the following aims:
• share knowledge about Robust Design as well as related disciplines, and standardise terminology and frameworks
• discuss and test out different robust design tools, methods and theory on real case studies in a workshop format
• collaborate on publications and research proposals
• share case studies, tools/methods and educational material
• in order to stimulate a discussion on utility and/or potential limits of early RD consideration (as Robustness is, beyond doubt, in many cases influenced by embodiment rather than conceptual decisions).

Focus

The SIG’s key objectives are:
(1) to provide a discussion platform for academics and practitioners to network, to collaborate and to discuss ideas, experiences and knowledge within the field of Robust Design
(2) to further the development of a coherent Robust Design Methodology, including early stage robustness indicators, a robust embodiment design approach, corresponding variation simulations, etc.

Committee

- Tobias Eifler, Technical University of Denmark (Chair)
- Benjamin Schleich, University Erlangen-Nuremberg (Co Chair)

Type of events

Conferences, workshops, mailing list, webinars, Special Issues

Robust Design Day - http://pd-symposium.org/RDD.php

Type of publications

As yet, the SIG focuses on creating open source material for the facilitated RD workshops. For an overview of the different Workshops, please visit http://www.robustdesign.org/workshop/

NEWS: New workshop on the Variation Management Framework (VMF) is available using the Vaavud wind reader (case files of design and production documentation have been purchased by the SIG and can be used for further studies. Please contact the SIG chairs for access).
