• To share knowledge about robust design and related disciplines
• To test out robust design tools, methods and theory on real case studies in a workshop format, to learn of their applicability and utility
• To standardise terminology and frameworks
• To collaborate on publications and research proposals
• To share case studies, tools/methods and educational material
• To learn from the application of robust design in various industrial sectors

Focus

1. To propose and debate Robust Design process – No complete holistic process for robust design exists, currently there are just a series of tools, methods and interesting theories such as Axiomatic Design, Taguchi Quality Loss, Transfer functions/Sensitivity analysis, Tolerance Design which are all interrelated. However, there is a need for a coherent process or clearly defined strategies for dealing with variance from the start to the end of the design process.
2. To Define a Tools/Methods box – A complete critique of the robust design tools and methods has begun at the last meeting. There is a need to position these tools correct on the design process and to understand the benefits of each and which tools supersede others.
3. To define a list of early robustness indicators – There is a real need for both leading and quantified indicators of robustness. By this we mean that at present, the reliably of a design is discovered at production yield. This is a lagging indicator in the sense it is already too late to do much about it. Current early stage indicators for robustness are predominantly at an activity level such as “has a Design FMEA been completed?” These are non-quantified and say little about how robust a design is. We hope to position these indicators onto the robust design process and tag them to typical stage gates.
