Dear members of the MMEP SIG, We would like to invite you to the next SIG workshop, which will be held Wednesday, 5th of November at the Open University office in Camden Town in London. During the last workshop we decided to address process modelling next by looking at different models of the same process. We have therefore decided to ask all participants to bring a model of the process of carrying out a PhD in the modelling format of their choice. However rather than discussing the relative merits of different PhD approaches we want to concentrate on what the different modelling languages and models show and include the decisions that people make in developing their models. We will also discuss how these issues affect the people’s wider...

Innovative product development is strongly connected to the cognitive and behavioral processes of human beings. During design new product ideas are found, new solutions are created and various decisions are made by different human stakeholders. Consequently, human behavior is of high interest to researches of different related fields. Their shared objective is to better understand how engineers, managers and customers think and act in the context of design. Key Topics: Design Cognition - Research on mental models and mental processes Visual Behavior - Research on visual attention and recognition Design Methodology - Research on acceptance of design methods and tools In recent years, conventional research methods (e.g. protocol analysis)...

The International Conference on Axiomatic Design (ICAD) series is the traditional meeting point of the worldwide Axiomatic Design Community since 2000. The 8th International Conference on Axiomatic Design (ICAD 2014) will be hosted by Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, in September 24-26 2014, at Campus de Caparica. Since its first edition, ICAD conferences have been held in Cambridge and Worcester (MA-USA), Seoul and Daejeon (Korea), Florence (Italy) and Lisbon (Portugal). Axiomatic Design was developed by Professor Nam P. Suh at the MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, by the end of the 1970s. In brief, Axiomatic Design is a systems design theory that uses matrix methods to systematically...

The 10th IDE (Integrated Design Engineering) Workshop will be held from September 10th to 12th, 2014, in Gommern. It's a great pleasure for us to invite you to this jubilee workshop. Furthermore the Chair of Information Technologies in Mechanical Engineering will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, too. This is a good opportunity to look back on research of past years as well as to take a look at upcoming challenges. As IDE - our further development of IPD - is based on six equivalent product attributes, three fulfilment attributes, and two economic attributes, we would like to discuss this extended approach of IPD with all its influences to and from its environments. In this context we would like to propose the following workshop topics: - What...

In the area of innovation, design and product development we quite often seem to know that something works in practice, but might lack understanding on the theoretical foundations. Many of the topical issues related to design, development, and innovation that seem to be regarded as “common knowledge” within the industry, are insufficiently founded from the theoretical perspective. On the other hand, results of academic research are often insufficiently disseminated to the industry. We are calling for evidence-based academic work on topical issues on design, product development and innovation that strengthens both our theoretical understanding, and the connection between theory and practice. The 10th biannual NordDesign Conference – Creating...

Dependency and Structure Modelling (DSM) techniques support complex system design by focusing attention on system elements and their interdependencies related to all domains: product, process and organization. For this 2014 edition, we would like to invite original scholarly work related to modeling, analysis and prediction of risk and change management in complex systems. Emergence is one of complex system properties stemming from its’ complexity, whether desired or not. This complexity makes it difficult to anticipate potential propagation of events, initiated or emergent, and to anticipate global consequences of decisions. Emergence irreducibility implies the need to develop approaches that will support risk and change management in complex...
